Kei vans, cargo and passenger
Same envelope, different box
A kei van is built to the identical size and displacement limits as a kei truck — 660 cc since 1990, 3.4 m × 1.48 m since October 1998 — but uses the whole envelope as enclosed space. Sliding doors on both flanks, a tailgate, a low flat floor and rear seats that fold or tumble out of the way are the standard arrangement.
Cargo badge or passenger badge
Japan registers commercial and passenger versions separately, and the makers gave them different names. Daihatsu sells the working van as Hijet Cargo and the passenger version as Atrai. Suzuki splits Every from Every Wagon. Subaru's passenger Sambar carried the Dias name, Mitsubishi's the Bravo and later Town Box, and Honda's the Vamos.
The difference is not only trim. On the eighth-generation Daihatsu the passenger Atrai (S120/S130) used a three-link independent rear suspension where the Hijet van kept a leaf-sprung live axle. If ride quality with people in the back matters more to you than carrying weight, that distinction is the one to chase.
What is here now
This section holds 53 vans spanning 1991–2025, 24 manual and 29 automatic, with 26 recorded as four-wheel drive. It also tends to carry the newest vehicles in the catalog, because current-generation cargo vans keep arriving while the classic-era trucks do not.
Before you buy
Slide both doors several times and listen to the track and roller; they carry a working life of use. Lift the rear floor mat and look at the seat pans and wheel arches, which is where water sits in a van that has been loaded wet. Check whether the roof is standard or high — it changes what fits and what garage it lives in. If you want seats, confirm the listing says the rear bench is present and folds, because cargo variants were often sold without a usable one. Titling requirements differ depending on where you live. Check yours first; ask us if you want help finding the right office.
