Four-wheel-drive wagons

What is here

This is the smallest section on the site, and it stays small. What currently sits in it is a pair of Toyota Land Cruiser Prados and a Daihatsu Terios — two quite different machines that happen to share a heading.

The J90-generation Prado, built from 1996, is body-on-frame, with independent double-wishbone front suspension and a four-link coil-sprung live rear axle, and it moved the Prado line to full-time four-wheel drive. Toyota offered it with a 3.4-litre 5VZ-FE V6 or a 2.7-litre 3RZ-FE four on the petrol side, turbodiesels alongside, and a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The first-generation Terios is a different animal: a unibody mini SUV with a 1.3-litre four and, on four-wheel-drive cars, a lockable centre differential.

Before you buy

On any twenty-five-year-old four-wheel drive, assume the drivetrain has been used and check accordingly: transfer case operation through every mode, differential and transfer oils, front wheel bearings, and the state of the chassis rails and crossmembers on the body-on-frame car. Ask what the listing records about the diff lock or centre diff and confirm it engages.

That is the whole section — 3 vehicles, $5,700–$17,900. If nothing here suits, tell us what you are after and we will watch the auctions for it. Check with your own state before you buy — registration requirements for imports are not the same everywhere. Ask us if you want a hand.
