Kei passenger cars
The same limits, a different brief
Kei cars live inside the identical box as kei trucks: 660 cc since 1990, and since October 1998 a body no longer than 3.4 m and no wider than 1.48 m. What changes is what the maker did with it. Instead of a load bed you get four seats, a boot, sound insulation and, usually, a much higher-revving engine.
Why so many of them are turbocharged
Because output was capped. From 1990 the makers observed a voluntary 64 PS ceiling, so the interesting kei cars are the ones that reached it from 660 cc rather than the ones that made do. That is why turbo and supercharged variants dominate the enthusiast end of the class — Daihatsu's EF-DET, Mitsubishi's 4A30 four-cylinder in the Pajero Mini, Honda's E07Z in the Life Dunk and Z.
What is on the list now
13 cars spanning 1995–2001: 3 manual, 10 automatic, 1 recorded as four-wheel drive. The category is small and it moves, so what is here today is genuinely the list rather than a sample. Note that a couple of cars filed here sit slightly outside the kei limits — a 1.3-litre Autozam among them — because the seller catalogued them by size class rather than by displacement.
Before you buy
A small turbocharged engine that has spent its life being worked deserves a careful look at oil service evidence, cooling and the turbo itself. Automatics in this class are typically three- or four-speed units and are worth a long test of their own. Interior trim and model-specific body panels are the hard parts to source, so buy the tidiest interior you can find rather than planning to fix one. Because registration is handled at state level, the paperwork you need depends on your address. Ask us before you commit.
