The Daihatsu Hijet, in detail
In production since 1960
The Hijet started in November 1960 as the L35 truck and L36 van, switched to a cab-over layout in 1964, and has run through eleven generations since — growing with the kei rules from 356 cc to 550 cc in 1976 and to 660 cc in 1990. Daihatsu put cumulative Japanese sales at around 7.4 million as of November 2020.
The generations you will actually meet
The seventh generation (S80/S82/S83, 1986–1994) brought the 659 cc EF three-cylinder. The eighth (S100/S110, January 1994 to January 1999) offered the EF in six-valve SOHC form as the EF-ES and EF-NS, twelve-valve DOHC as the EF-GS, EF-VE and EF-ZS, and turbocharged as the EF-TS and EF-RS, with a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic and a front mid-engine layout driving the rear or all four wheels.
The ninth (S200/S210, from 1999, truck production to July 2014) added the KF-VE. The current truck line, S500 and S510, arrived in September 2014 with the KF-VE and turbocharged KF-DET, five-speed manual and three- or four-speed automatics, with a CVT joining in December 2021.
Bodies: Jumbo, Deck Van, Cargo, dump
More than the engine, the body is what people choose a Hijet for. The Jumbo is the extended cab, trading bed length for space behind the seats. The Deck Van keeps a short cargo bed behind a full second row. Cargo is the enclosed van. On top of that sit the tipping conversions in our dump section and the Climber off-road variants. Decide which body you want before you start comparing prices, because they are not interchangeable.
How it compares — and where the badges blur
Mechanically the Hijet sits closest to the Carry: both front mid-engine, engine under the seats. The Acty carries its engine behind the cab, the Sambar at the rear.
The badges converge later. From December 2011 Toyota sold the S201 Hijet Truck as the Pixis Truck, and from April 2012 Subaru's Sambar became a rebadged Hijet. A recent Sambar and a recent Hijet are the same vehicle.
What is in stock, and what to check
205 Hijet, 1989–2025: 128 recorded four-wheel drive, 165 manual and 40 automatic. Because the range spans several generations, confirm which engine family a given truck has — EF and KF want different parts.
Look at the bed floor and its cross members, the cab mounts, and, on Jumbo and Deck Van bodies, the extra seams behind the cab where water collects. What your DMV will ask for is a local question with a local answer. Sort it out first — ask us if you are not sure where to start. ask us about any specific vehicle.
