The JDM car section, explained
What this section is for
Everything else on this site is a working vehicle. This is the part of the catalog that exists because the Japanese domestic market sold cars, engines and trim levels that never came to the United States, and after twenty-five years those become importable. The buyer here is not solving a hauling problem; they want a specific car.
What the listings record under the hood
Read the spec line rather than the name. Across the cars currently listed, the engine field records Nissan SR20DE and SR20DET four-cylinders, Subaru EJ20 and EJ207 flat-fours and the EJ206/EJ208 twin-turbo pairing from the Legacy B4, Toyota 1JZ-GTE and 2JZ-FSE straight sixes, 1UZ-FE and 3UZ-FE V8s, and Honda's H22A and F20B. Those codes tell you far more about what you are getting — and what parts you will be buying — than the model name does.
Automatics outnumber manuals here
Of the 35 cars in this section, 13 are listed with a manual gearbox and 22 with an automatic. That surprises people, but it follows the source market: Japan's luxury saloons and grand tourers were overwhelmingly automatic, and they are a large share of what comes out of the auctions. If you specifically want three pedals, treat it as a filter, not an assumption.
Before you buy
These cars are older and many have been modified. Read the listing for coilovers, aftermarket exhausts, wheels and engine management, and understand that a modified car is a different maintenance proposition to a stock one. Ask for photographs of strut towers, rear arches and the underside. We list the specification and condition notes we were given and nothing beyond them — if a detail matters to you, ask us and we will go and look. What your DMV will ask for is a local question with a local answer. Sort it out first — ask us if you are not sure where to start.
