The Honda Vamos, in detail
Two different vehicles, one name
The original Vamos ran from 1970 to 1973: an open leisure kei vehicle based on the Honda TN360, with a 354 cc air-cooled twin mounted amidships, MacPherson strut front suspension and a De Dion rear. Around 2,500 were built before production stopped in March 1973 ahead of incoming safety standards. It is not what you will find here.
Honda revived the name in June 1999 for a microvan built on the third-generation Acty platform. That is the Vamos in this catalog.
The 1999 car
Power comes from the 656 cc E07Z SOHC three-cylinder, naturally aspirated or turbocharged, in a front mid-engine layout driving the rear wheels or, with a viscous-coupling full-time system, all four. Transmissions were a five-speed manual or a three- or four-speed automatic. In April 2003 the Vamos Hobio joined it, with a roof 105 mm taller and the Acty Van's larger tailgate. Production ended on 21 May 2018.
Vamos or Acty Van?
Mechanically they are close relatives; the difference is intent. The Acty Van is a commercial vehicle with a load bay, the Vamos is trimmed and seated for people. If passengers are the point, start here; if you want to carry cargo and hose it out afterwards, the Acty hub is the better list.
What is in stock, and what to check
10 Vamos, 1999–2001: 6 automatic against 4 manual, and 3 recorded as four-wheel drive. Passenger kei vans skew automatic, so if you want a manual treat it as the filter.
Check the sliding door tracks, the floor under the rear seats, and any sunroof or glass-roof seal. On turbocharged cars, ask about the turbo's history. How an imported vehicle gets titled and plated is decided locally, not federally. Ask us before you buy rather than relying on a forum thread.
New to importing? Read how shipping and import works, check the kei truck FAQ, or ask us about a specific Honda Vamos.
