Buying a Japanese kei truck in the United States

A kei truck is a Japanese light truck built to that country's kei jidōsha class rules — a 660cc engine ceiling and a body no longer than 3.4 metres or wider than 1.48 metres. Those limits produced a vehicle that is narrow enough for an orchard row, light enough for soft ground, and cheap enough to run all day. Nothing sold new in America occupies the same space: a half-ton pickup is roughly twice the width, and a UTV is not street-legal in most places. We currently hold 945 of them, from 1983 to 2025, starting at $3,920.

Which model suits the work

Five nameplates account for most of the market, and they are more alike than different — all rear- or four-wheel drive, all around 660cc, all built to carry roughly 350 kg. Choose on availability, parts, and the specific gearbox and drivetrain you need.

505 of our vehicles are four-wheel drive and 684 are manual. Selectable 4WD with a low range and a rear diff lock is the combination worth holding out for if the truck will work on wet ground, and it is common on the Acty, Sambar, Carry and Hijet.

How importing works

A vehicle 25 or more years old is exempt from the federal motor vehicle safety standards that would otherwise block it, which is why almost everything here is a 1990s or early 2000s model. The 25 years run from the month of manufacture, not the model year — a truck built in August 2001 becomes eligible in August 2026, not on 1 January.

Federal import eligibility and state road registration are two separate questions decided by two different governments. Being legally imported does not by itself guarantee your state will plate it for highway use, and the rules differ meaningfully from state to state. Ask us about your state before you buy — we would rather answer that first than sell you the wrong vehicle.

We handle the import and the title paperwork, and deliver door to door anywhere in the 50 states for a flat $350. See shipping and delivery for timings.

What people actually do with them

Farms and ranches are the largest single use — feed, fencing and tools down tracks a full-size pickup would chew up. After that: vineyards and orchards, where the 1.48 m width matters; campuses, resorts and municipal yards running grounds crews; hunting camps and rural properties wanting four-wheel drive without a UTV's road restrictions; and trades using a mini dump truck for spoil and aggregate. We hold 671 kei and mini trucks, 71 mini dump trucks, and 139 vans.

What to check before you commit

Ask for the chassis code and match it to the year — it tells you the generation, engine family and whether four-wheel drive was factory. Confirm whether the odometer reads in kilometres, as most JDM imports do. Decide early between a 5-speed manual and an automatic, since automatics are far scarcer in this class. And treat rust on the bed floor and cab corners as the thing worth looking hardest at, because it is the repair that costs the most to put right.

Every listing here shows the chassis code, engine, gearbox, drivetrain and recorded odometer, with photographs of the actual vehicle rather than a stock image. Browse all 945 vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you buy or import.

Are kei trucks street legal in the USA?

Federal import eligibility and state road registration are two separate questions. A vehicle 25 or more years old clears the federal side; whether your state will plate it for highway use is decided locally and the rules are not uniform. Tell us where you are and check with your own titling agency before you order.

Do you handle importing and the title?

We handle the import side — customs and the paperwork that comes with the vehicle. Titling and registration happen in your state, in your name, and the taxes and fees there are yours.

How does shipping work?

Flat $350 per vehicle, door to door, anywhere in the 50 states — the same price whether you are two hours away or across the country. Delivery normally runs one to three days after dispatch.

Can I reserve a vehicle?

Yes. A $500 deposit per vehicle at checkout takes it off the market, and we then contact you to arrange the balance and the delivery. You can also pay in full at checkout instead.

What condition are the vehicles in?

Every vehicle is inspected before it is loaded on a trailer. Beyond that these are used Japanese imports and condition varies from one to the next, so each listing carries the model year, odometer reading and units, drivetrain, transmission and photos, and 432 of them have a walkaround video. Ask us about any specific vehicle before you order.
