What is in the van section
Two sizes, one heading
Most of what sits here is kei-class: Acty Van, Sambar Van, Every Van, Minicab Van, Hijet Van, Vamos. Those are 660 cc vehicles under 1.5 m wide, and if that is what you want, the kei van section is the tighter list.
The rest are full-size Japanese people movers and light commercials — Honda Odyssey and Step Wagon, Toyota Estima and LiteAce, Mazda Bongo, Nissan AD Van. Those are ordinary-sized vehicles with ordinary-sized engines that happen to be right-hand drive and were never sold here. They cost more, they drive like a normal van, and they will not fit down the trails a kei van will.
Why the bigger ones get imported at all
The Japanese domestic market got body styles and drivetrain combinations that never reached US showrooms: eight-seat one-box vans with the engine under the front seats, turbo-diesel four-wheel-drive people movers, factory pop-tops and camper conversions. That is the appeal — not that they are faster or cheaper, but that they do not exist here.
The current list
86 vans across 8 makers, 49 manual and 37 automatic, 24 recorded as four-wheel drive. Prices run $4,090–$19,995, which reflects that split — the kei vans and the full-size vans are not competing with each other.
Before you buy
Check which side the sliding door is on and picture using it from a right-hand-drive seat at an American kerb. On the bigger vans, look at the sill and inner arch behind the sliding door, the seat rails on any van with removable rows, and, on anything with a factory sunroof or pop-top, every roof seam. Confirm seat count from the listing rather than from the body style. Every state handles imported vehicles a little differently, so treat registration as something to settle before purchase, not after. Ask us.
