The Suzuki Carry, in detail
A truck, once the van moved out
The Carry has been in production since 1961, but it has not always meant only a truck. The enclosed-body half of the range moved out in December 1982 and became the Every, leaving the Carry badge on the load-bed vehicles — flatbed, dropside and, in our dump section, tipping.
Chassis codes are worth learning here
Suzuki's codes tell you the drivetrain. Through the ninth generation (1991–1999) the truck was the DC51T in rear-wheel drive and the DD51T in four-wheel drive, on the 657 cc F6A three-cylinder, with four- and five-speed manuals or a three-speed automatic and an 1,855 mm wheelbase. The tenth generation from 1999 covers DA52, DB52, DA62 and DA63 — again with the DB and DD prefixes marking four-wheel drive — moving from the F6A to the K6A. The eleventh generation, from 2013, is the DA16T.
Knowing whether you are looking at an F6A or a K6A truck is more useful than knowing the model year, because that is the line parts fall on.
How it compares to its rivals
The Hijet is the closest match — same front mid-engine layout, same broad body range, and the two have traded places at the top of the Japanese sales charts for decades. The Acty differs in putting the engine behind the cab, and the Sambar in putting it at the back.
The Carry's other distinction is how many badges it wears. Mazda's Autozam Scrum was a rebadged Suzuki; since 2013 so is Nissan's NT100 Clipper (DR16T), and since February 2014 Mitsubishi's Minicab (DS16T).
What is in stock, and what to check
140 Carry covering 1990–2015: 83 recorded four-wheel drive, 127 manual, 12 automatic, 23 with an extra-low or hi-lo range recorded. A meaningful share of them are dumps rather than flatbeds.
Check the bed floor and its supports, the frame where the rear body mounts, and — if the listing claims low range or a differential lock — that the linkage actually engages. Those were options. Titling requirements differ depending on where you live. Check yours first; ask us if you want help finding the right office.
