Background: the Carry

The Carry uses the classic kei arrangement — cab-over body, engine mounted longitudinally under the driver's seat, drive to the rear — which keeps everything short-coupled and within reach. The Carry moved to a semi-cab-over nose in January 1999, but the engine stayed under the driver's seat — the change was to the bodywork, not to the layout. Suzuki was candid about who the Carry was for: individual shopkeepers, small workshops, and agriculture, forestry and fisheries. It has sold a dedicated farm grade with a differential lock continuously. Four-wheel-drive Carrys were sold specifically for agricultural and mountain work, which is where the low-range and locking-differential options in this family came from.
