A very long production run

The Hijet has been in production since November 1960 and has run through eleven generations, moving to a cab-over layout in 1964 and following every change in the kei rules since — 356 cc, then 550 cc from 1976, then 660 cc from 1990. Daihatsu reported around 7.4 million Hijets sold in Japan as of November 2020.

Longevity is the practical point, not the trivia. A model built continuously for six decades in dozens of body configurations leaves behind a deep pool of used vehicles and a deep pool of parts.

And it is not only sold as a Daihatsu

Since December 2011 Toyota has sold the S201 Hijet Truck as the Pixis Truck, and since April 2012 Subaru's Sambar has been a rebadged Hijet rather than Subaru's own rear-engined design. If you are looking at a recent Sambar or a Pixis, you are looking at Daihatsu engineering.

219 vehicles spanning 1989–2025: 173 manual, 46 automatic, 132 recorded as four-wheel drive. Most of it is Hijet — flatbed trucks, Jumbo extended cabs, Deck Vans, Cargo vans and tipping dump beds — with the passenger Atrai alongside and the odd Move, Naked or Terios.

If you want one specific body style, start from the model list above rather than scrolling the whole make. Nothing about titling an import is standardised nationally. Establish what your state requires first — ask us if that is not obvious.
