Daihatsu is Toyota's small-vehicle specialist and the Hijet is the product it has spent longest refining — sixty-plus years of iteration on a single idea, and it shows in how resolved the details are. The Hijet was built to be maintained by its owner rather than by a dealer: the seats tip forward, the engine is right there, and the service points are deliberately obvious. Daihatsu sold the Hijet in an unusually wide spread of factory body styles — flatbed, PTO dump, panel van, canvas top, the extended-cab Jumbo from 1983 and the four-seat Deck Van from 1988 — because Japanese buyers specified them for particular trades.

Under it is the KF, a fuel-injected 660cc 3-cylinder engine. Daihatsu replaced the long-running EF with the KF, moving to twin cams and full electronic engine management. Drive reaches the road through a 5-speed manual gearbox with a high/low range transfer case, four-wheel drive.
