One idea, carried for forty years

Honda's kei commercial line starts with the Acty in July 1977 and keeps one distinctive feature the whole way through: the engine sits mid-mounted behind the cab rather than under the seats. It began as a 545 cc twin driving the rear wheels, gained four-wheel drive in March 1983, moved to the E05A and then the 656 cc E07A three-cylinder, and finished on the E07Z. Truck production ran until April 2021.

The passenger side of the family grew out of the same hardware. The Street arrived in February 1981, and the Vamos name returned in June 1999 on the third-generation Acty platform.

What that means when you are shopping

If you are cross-shopping badges, Honda is the one where the mechanical layout genuinely differs — a Hijet or Carry keeps its engine under the seats, a Sambar keeps it at the back. Whether that suits you depends on the job, but it is a real difference rather than a badge difference, and it is the reason people who like Actys tend to keep buying them.

253 vehicles: 217 manual, 36 automatic, 130 recorded as four-wheel drive, $4,000–$19,995. The bulk is Acty in truck and van form; alongside it sit the Vamos, kei passenger cars such as the Z and Life Dunk, and occasional full-size cars — Odyssey, Step Wagon, Torneo — that were sold only in Japan.
