A mini dump is not a separate model line. It is a standard kei truck — Hijet, Carry, Sambar, Minicab, Acty — that left the factory or a Japanese body shop with a hydraulic tipping deck in place of the flat one. Everything under the cab is the same vehicle you will find in the kei truck section, so the same engines, gearboxes and rust habits apply.

What you are really buying on top of that is the hoist, the deck and the controls, and that is where the value and the risk both sit.

Reading the names in the listings

Japanese sellers use a shorthand that carries over into our titles: SD, HD and LD dump, plus deep, three-way, PTO and cleaning-dump variants. Broadly they describe how the deck is built and how it tips — a three-way deck drops on more than one side, a PTO truck drives its pump off the drivetrain rather than an electric motor. We will not guess which of those a given truck is from its title alone. Ask us and we will check the individual vehicle.

The current mix

Of the 71 here, 67 are manual and 4 automatic, and 36 are recorded as four-wheel drive; 13 record an extra-low or hi-lo range. That mix is not an accident. Dumps get bought by people who intend to load them, and low gearing plus 4WD is what makes a loaded kei truck usable on a soft site.

What to check on the tipping gear

Work the bed up and down through its full travel and watch the ram for weeping at the seal. Look at the hose runs where they flex, the pivot pins and bushes at the rear of the deck, the condition of the sub-frame the hoist bolts to, and whether the tailgate latches actually close square. Check the deck floor from underneath as well as from above — a dump deck rusts from the inside out because it holds wet material.

Also think about weight before you buy rather than after. A dump body adds mass to a vehicle built to a light-class limit, which affects what it can carry and how you will register it. How an imported vehicle gets titled and plated is decided locally, not federally. Ask us before you buy rather than relying on a forum thread.
