Honda Acty for Sale

What it was built for

Honda launched the Acty in July 1977 as a working kei truck and van for Japanese trades and farms: a 545 cc EH twin mounted amidships, rear-wheel drive, and a load bed occupying most of a 3.2-metre body. Four-wheel drive was added in March 1983. Truck production continued, through three more generations, until April 2021.

Generations and chassis codes

The second generation ran from May 1988 and is the one most of this stock comes from. Early cars (HA1, HA2, and HH1/HH2 vans) used the 547 cc E05A; from 1990 the 656 cc E07A arrived with the codes HA3, HA4, HA5, HH3 and HH4, rated at 38 PS with a carburettor or 44 PS with fuel injection. Gearboxes were four- and five-speed manuals or a three-speed automatic. Trim ran STD, SDX and Town, with the Attack adding a differential lock and the Crawler (HA5, 1994–1999) running tandem treads.

The third generation arrived in May 1999 — HA6 and HA7 trucks, HH5 and HH6 vans — on the 656 cc E07Z, still mid-mounted, with a five-speed manual or a three- or four-speed automatic. That truck ran to December 2009; the fourth-generation HA8 and HA9 took it to 2021, and the van continued until April 2018.

How it compares to a Carry, Hijet or Sambar

Engine placement is the real difference. The Suzuki Carry and Daihatsu Hijet use a front mid-engine layout with the engine beneath the seats; the Subaru Sambar puts it at the very back with four-wheel independent suspension; the Mitsubishi Minicab of the same era is front-engined. The Acty is the one with the engine behind the cab, under the bed.

The engine families differ too, and that is what you will be buying parts for: Honda's E-series three-cylinder against Suzuki's F6A, Daihatsu's EF, Mitsubishi's 3G83 and Subaru's four-cylinder EN07.

What is in stock right now

223 Acty, model years 1988–2001, $4,000–$19,995. 125 are recorded as four-wheel drive and 62 as two-wheel drive; 209 are manual against 14 automatic. Both truck and van bodies are represented, and the engine field is dominated by the E07A with a run of later E07Z cars behind it.

Before you buy one

Check the bed floor and the frame rails beneath it, the cab corners and the rockers — that is where these rust. Four-wheel drive and the Attack differential lock were options rather than standard fitment, so buy from the specification on the individual listing rather than from what the model "usually" has.
