On four-wheel-drive Sambars the drive runs forward from the rear-mounted engine, the exact reverse of the usual kei arrangement. The TT2 designation follows Subaru's own convention: the letters give the body and the number gives the drive. The Sambar is the odd one out in the class and deliberately so: Subaru put the engine right at the back, behind the rear axle, and drove the rear wheels from there.
