Background: the Carry

Suzuki has supplied the Carry to other manufacturers to badge as their own — Mazda since 1989, later Nissan and Mitsubishi — so the same underlying truck circulates under several names, which is another reason the parts supply runs deep. Japanese buyers bought Carrys by the hundred thousand for farms, markets and building sites, so a 1997 example is the product of decades of unglamorous refinement. Suzuki was candid about who the Carry was for: individual shopkeepers, small workshops, and agriculture, forestry and fisheries. It has sold a dedicated farm grade with a differential lock continuously.

Under it is the F6A, a 660cc 3-cylinder single-cam engine. The F6A sits under the seats rather than ahead of the driver, so servicing starts by tipping the bench forward. The 660cc engine drives through a manual gearbox. Suzuki built the F6A in carburetted, injected and turbocharged forms and in both six-valve and twelve-valve single-cam heads, and that breadth is part of why it survived so long.
