The Toyota Crown, in detail
What the Crown is
The Crown is Toyota's long-running Japanese-market large car: a four-door saloon since 1955, with a wagon in the range from 1955 to 2007, front-engined and rear-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive offered from 1995. It is the car Japanese executives, hotels and taxi fleets bought, which is why the specification levels are high and the mileages often are not.
The Crown Majesta, built from October 1991 to April 2018, is the upmarket variant — Toyota's flagship in several markets and a larger, more heavily equipped car than the standard Crown.
Engines in this generation
The S170 Majesta, from September 1999 to July 2004, was offered with a 3.0-litre 2JZ-FSE straight six rated at 228 PS or a 4.0-litre 1UZ-FE V8 at 294 PS, driving through a four-speed or five-speed A650E automatic, with an i-Four four-wheel-drive system available alongside the standard rear-wheel drive.
Our own listings record 1UZ-FE V8s in the Majestas and 2JZ-FSE and 1JZ-GTE straight sixes in the Crown Estate wagons. Read the engine line on each vehicle rather than inferring it from the model name — the Crown range shared body shells across very different powertrains.
What is in stock, and what to check
5 Crown, 2000–2001, $14,995–$17,995, all automatic. These come and go individually rather than in batches.
A twenty-five-year-old Japanese flagship carries a lot of systems that a kei truck does not: climate control, electric seats, navigation, air suspension on some specifications. Test every one of them, and price in the fact that trim and electronic parts for a Japan-only model are harder to find than mechanical ones. Navigation and audio units are usually Japanese-language. Registration rules are set state by state, so confirm yours before you commit — ask us and we will help you work it out.
