What a Hijet is
The Hijet has been in continuous production since November 1960, which makes it the oldest surviving kei nameplate — and in 2021 it took a Good Design Long Life Design Award, a first for Daihatsu. Daihatsu supplies the Hijet to other makers for rebadging — Toyota since 2011, Subaru since 2012 — and it was licence-built abroad as the Piaggio Porter in Italy and the Asia Towner in Korea. The Hijet Climber was the first kei vehicle offered with a limited-slip differential, and low-range sub-transmissions were a factory option across several generations. The Hijet was built to be maintained by its owner rather than by a dealer: the seats tip forward, the engine is right there, and the service points are deliberately obvious.
The mechanical side of this Hijet
Behind the White bodywork sits a manual gearbox.
2022 Daihatsu Hijet: recorded details
It shows 6,153 miles on the clock, with a condition of used on file. On the specification sheet: Air conditioning and heat, Air conditioning and Power steering.
What a Hijet is good for
A closed body keeps the load dry and locked, which is the trade you make against the open bed of the truck version. What you see is what we have: a White Hijet on our lot, not a listing for a vehicle still in an auction hall. Price on this one is $18,800. Japan's kei category exists because small vehicles are taxed and registered differently there, and the Hijet was built specifically to qualify.
