The Hijet Climber was the first kei vehicle offered with a limited-slip differential, and low-range sub-transmissions were a factory option across several generations. The Hijet was built to be maintained by its owner rather than by a dealer: the seats tip forward, the engine is right there, and the service points are deliberately obvious. Every four-wheel-drive Minicab from 1984 onward got twelve-inch front disc brakes and automatic free-wheeling front hubs as standard. Four-wheel-drive Hijets were aimed at farm and forestry work, which is where the sub-transmission low range and the differential locks in this family come from.
