The Carry uses the classic kei arrangement — cab-over body, engine mounted longitudinally under the driver's seat, drive to the rear — which keeps everything short-coupled and within reach. Japanese buyers bought Carrys by the hundred thousand for farms, markets and building sites, so a 1999 example is the product of decades of unglamorous refinement.
