1997 Daihatsu Hijet: the background

The EF-ES here belongs to a Daihatsu engine family that ran for well over a decade across the company's kei range. The Hijet was built to be maintained by its owner rather than by a dealer: the seats tip forward, the engine is right there, and the service points are deliberately obvious. The Hijet has been in continuous production since November 1960, which makes it the oldest surviving kei nameplate — and in 2021 it took a Good Design Long Life Design Award, a first for Daihatsu.
