What a Hijet Truck is

Daihatsu is Toyota's small-vehicle specialist and the Hijet is the product it has spent longest refining — sixty-plus years of iteration on a single idea, and it shows in how resolved the details are. Trade-spec Hijets were overwhelmingly white; this one is recorded as White. Daihatsu sold the Hijet in an unusually wide spread of factory body styles — flatbed, PTO dump, panel van, canvas top, the extended-cab Jumbo from 1983 and the four-seat Deck Van from 1988 — because Japanese buyers specified them for particular trades. A 1996 Hijet sits in the middle of a production run that has outlasted most of the companies that started building trucks alongside it.

The engine is recorded as the EF. Daihatsu's EF series is a 659cc three built in a great many variants, from plain carburetted versions to twin-cam and turbocharged ones. Behind the White bodywork sits a 5-speed gearbox.

Owning a Hijet Truck

Plenty of buyers keep a Hijet Truck looking exactly as it arrived; this one is White and presented as we received it. What you see is what we have: a White Hijet Truck on our lot, not a listing for a vehicle still in an auction hall. It is listed at $5,700.
