The 1992 Sambar in context
Enthusiasts nicknamed the rear-engined Sambar the "agricultural Porsche", and the joke does real work: rear engine, rear drive, four cylinders, independent suspension all round. When production ended, the supercharged EN07 was the only supercharged engine left in any Japanese car, kei or otherwise — the Sambar was the last kei truck you could order with forced induction. The name comes from the sambar deer, in keeping with the rest of Subaru's naming of that era. Putting the engine under the bed was a deliberate load-carrying decision: on a kei truck the difference between empty and laden is enormous, and the engine acts as ballast over the driven axle when the bed is empty.
Buying this 1992 Sambar
Farms, vineyards, ranches, grounds crews and building sites are where Sambars end up in the US, for the same reasons they ended up there in Japan — Japanese sources describe the kei truck as a necessity for moving tools, crops and catch. A 1992 build date puts this one well past the 25-year federal import threshold. Price on this one is $4,536.
