1992 Subaru Sambar: the background

The Sambar is the odd one out in the class and deliberately so: Subaru put the engine right at the back, behind the rear axle, and drove the rear wheels from there. The name comes from the sambar deer, in keeping with the rest of Subaru's naming of that era. Subaru's rocker covers carry a cast "CLOVER4" badge with a four-leaf clover — a nod to the four-cylinder layout the company built its kei reputation on. Putting the engine behind the rear axle loads the driven wheels, and that is a large part of why Sambars have the traction reputation they do.

Practicalities of this Sambar

A Sambar is not a substitute for a full-size pickup so much as a replacement for the trips where a full-size pickup was always overkill. It is on our books as 596, and what this listing records is what we hold on file for it. Price on this one is $8,789. Japan's kei category exists because small vehicles are taxed and registered differently there, and the Sambar was built specifically to qualify.
