Why the Sambar Truck is different

Enthusiasts nicknamed the rear-engined Sambar the "agricultural Porsche", and the joke does real work: rear engine, rear drive, four cylinders, independent suspension all round. Subaru built the Sambar in-house from 1961 until the last one left the line on 29 February 2012, after which the badge moved onto a rebadged Daihatsu. A 2000 vehicle comes from the in-house era. Every Subaru-built Sambar is a full cab-over, which is precisely how Subaru got a longer cargo bed than its rivals onto the same overall length.

Power comes from the EN07, a 660cc unit. The EN07 is a long-stroke design — 56.0mm bore against a 66.8mm stroke — with a single overhead camshaft and eight valves. The TT2 runs a 5-speed manual gearbox with an extra-low crawler gear.
