1983 Subaru Sambar: the background

Japan's Akabou courier cooperative ran Sambars almost exclusively for three decades, on a factory type-approved version with its own valves, pistons, rods and crankshaft built to cover 200,000 kilometres of courier work — a fair indication of what the platform tolerates. Subaru built the Sambar in-house from 1961 until the last one left the line on 29 February 2012, after which the badge moved onto a rebadged Daihatsu. A 1983 vehicle comes from the in-house era. Putting the engine behind the rear axle loads the driven wheels, and that is a large part of why Sambars have the traction reputation they do. Every Subaru-built Sambar is a full cab-over, which is precisely how Subaru got a longer cargo bed than its rivals onto the same overall length.

How this 1983 Sambar is put together

It runs a 550cc 2-cylinder engine. The 1983 Sambar came with a manual gearbox, and that is what this one has.

Living with a Sambar

Plenty of buyers keep a Sambar looking exactly as it arrived; this one is White and presented as we received it. What you see is what we have: a White Sambar on our lot, not a listing for a vehicle still in an auction hall. Price on this one is $6,614.
