About This Vehicle

This 1997 Subaru Sambar Truck is a Japanese domestic-market vehicle we imported and are selling directly, finished in White.

1997 Subaru Sambar Truck: the background

The Sambar is the odd one out in the class and deliberately so: Subaru put the engine right at the back, behind the rear axle, and drove the rear wheels from there. Subaru's Sambar was the first ordinary kei truck and cab-van offered with four-wheel drive, from 1980. Enthusiasts nicknamed the rear-engined Sambar the "agricultural Porsche", and the joke does real work: rear engine, rear drive, four cylinders, independent suspension all round.

1997 Subaru Sambar Truck: footprint and load rating

On the paperwork it measures 330cm × 140cm × 183cm. The documents give a kerb weight of 750kg, a rated load capacity of 350kg and 8.45m³ of measured cargo volume. Recorded as Kei truck, Trucks with seating for 2, model year 1997.

How this 1997 Sambar Truck is put together

Power comes from the EN07, a 660cc unit. The EN07 is a genuine four-cylinder in a kei-sized package. Subaru kept building it long after almost everyone else had settled on three cylinders, and it is the single biggest reason Sambars have their own following. Drive reaches the road through a 5-speed manual gearbox with an extra-low crawler gear, four-wheel drive.

Living with a Sambar Truck

Drop sides are the feature owners end up valuing most: on a bed this size all three fold flat, so awkward loads go on and off sideways rather than over a tailgate. What you see is what we have: a White Sambar Truck on our lot, not a listing for a vehicle still in an auction hall.
