1998 Subaru Sambar 4WD: engine, gearbox and running gear
Under it is the EN07, a 660cc 4-cylinder engine. The EN07 is a genuine four-cylinder in a kei-sized package. Subaru kept building it long after almost everyone else had settled on three cylinders, and it is the single biggest reason Sambars have their own following. The EN07 drives through a manual gearbox. The trim designation records selectable 2WD / 4WD high and an extra-low crawler gear.
About the 1998 Subaru Sambar
Sambars turn up in more colours than most kei trucks because Subaru sold plenty to private buyers as well as to trades; this one is White. Enthusiasts nicknamed the rear-engined Sambar the "agricultural Porsche", and the joke does real work: rear engine, rear drive, four cylinders, independent suspension all round. On four-wheel-drive Sambars the drive runs forward from the rear-mounted engine, the exact reverse of the usual kei arrangement.
Recorded condition of this 1998 Sambar 4WD
The odometer reads 43,908. The source recorded no unit alongside that figure, so 43,908 is reproduced exactly as stored rather than converted. On the specification sheet: air conditioning.
Where a Sambar 4WD earns its keep
A 1998 Sambar 4WD is old enough to be simple and new enough to be usable, which is most of why this generation gets exported rather than scrapped. At 28 years old, this 1998 Sambar 4WD is outside the window where federal safety-standard conformity applies to an import. Price on this one is $13,900.
