About This Vehicle

The 1997 Sambar in context

The Sambar is the odd one out in the class and deliberately so: Subaru put the engine right at the back, behind the rear axle, and drove the rear wheels from there. Subaru's Sambar was the first ordinary kei truck and cab-van offered with four-wheel drive, from 1980. Subaru gave the Sambar four-wheel independent suspension from the very first 1961 model, at a time when Japanese passenger cars mostly did without it — struts at the front, semi-trailing arms at the rear. Every Subaru-built Sambar is a full cab-over, which is precisely how Subaru got a longer cargo bed than its rivals onto the same overall length.

How this 1997 Sambar HD Dump 4WD is put together

Power comes from the EN07, a 660cc 4-cylinder unit. Sending drive forward from a rear-mounted EN07 gave Subaru a four-wheel-drive layout unlike anything else in the class. The KS4 runs a manual gearbox. Listed drivetrain equipment includes an extra-low crawler gear and selectable 2WD / 4WD high.
