About the 2000 Daihatsu Hijet

A 2000 Hijet sits in the middle of a production run that has outlasted most of the companies that started building trucks alongside it. Daihatsu is Toyota's small-vehicle specialist and the Hijet is the product it has spent longest refining — sixty-plus years of iteration on a single idea, and it shows in how resolved the details are. The Hijet was built to be maintained by its owner rather than by a dealer: the seats tip forward, the engine is right there, and the service points are deliberately obvious. Four-wheel-drive Hijets were aimed at farm and forestry work, which is where the sub-transmission low range and the differential locks in this family come from.

How this 2000 Hijet is put together

It runs a 660cc engine. The 2000 Hijet came with a manual gearbox, and that is what this one has.

Living with a Hijet

A 2000 Hijet is old enough to be simple and new enough to be usable, which is most of why this generation gets exported rather than scrapped. Built in 2000, this Hijet is 26 years old and clears the 25-year threshold at which imported vehicles are exempt from US federal motor vehicle safety standards conformity. It is listed at $5,037.
