About This Vehicle
Currently available: a 1999 Daihatsu Hijet, finished in White, imported by us from Japan. We have it on file as stock number 2853, chassis S200P0001037. 10 photographs of this specific vehicle are on this listing.
The 1999 Hijet in context
Daihatsu sold the Hijet in an unusually wide spread of factory body styles — flatbed, PTO dump, panel van, canvas top, the extended-cab Jumbo from 1983 and the four-seat Deck Van from 1988 — because Japanese buyers specified them for particular trades. Daihatsu supplies the Hijet to other makers for rebadging — Toyota since 2011, Subaru since 2012 — and it was licence-built abroad as the Piaggio Porter in Italy and the Asia Towner in Korea. Trade-spec Hijets were overwhelmingly white; this one is recorded as White. Every four-wheel-drive Minicab from 1984 onward got twelve-inch front disc brakes and automatic free-wheeling front hubs as standard.

Owning a Hijet
A 1999 Hijet is old enough to be simple and new enough to be usable, which is most of why this generation gets exported rather than scrapped. Built in 1999, this Hijet is 27 years old and clears the 25-year threshold at which imported vehicles are exempt from US federal motor vehicle safety standards conformity. It is listed at $5,544. Japan's kei category exists because small vehicles are taxed and registered differently there, and the Hijet was built specifically to qualify. Plenty of buyers keep a Hijet looking exactly as it arrived; this one is White and presented as we received it.
